Mumbai – BJP MP Poonam Mahajan faced flak from common people as well as political commentators for her attempt to connect farmers’ protest with naxalism. Speaking with a news channel, Poonam Mahajan said though she sympathises with farmers’ plight, she is sceptical about this particular protest, since the farmers were wearing red caps and holding red flags.
Probably unaware about the fact that the protest was led by All Indian Kisan Sabha, CPI’s farmers’ wing, she questioned the red colour and associated it with naxalism. ‘Urban naxalites are trying to spread their presence in every strata of the society and hence they are protesting here,’ she said. Her insensitive comments brought heavy criticism from every nook and corner. Common people took to social media to condemn her remarks and some even reminded her about the charges levelled by her aunt Sarangi against her family.
